Geek Games

Games aren’t one of my best things. I like them, but I’m not very good. For years, I’ve been saying that I’m happy to play chess with you . . . if you want to win. I can just about keep the proper moves for each piece in my head. But that seems to be all the space I’ve got. I can barely think about my next move, much less anything several moves ahead. How do people do it?

Video games are another one. I realize I’m showing my age, but I remember Pac Man when it first came out. Do you? No. Oh well. Then Ms. Pac Man. Oh, stop laughing! At least I could sorta play that one. Sorta. Kinda. I mean, sometimes I managed to eat most of those silly dots. I didn’t dare try any of the more difficult games in the video arcade. I just don’t have the hand-eye coordination.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did.

Bill Gates dream was coming true. Computers were cropping up on everyone’s desk, and not just at work, either. The prices came down over time and soon people had a computer on their desk at home, too. And what was on those computers? Computer games. Yikes.

I date geeks. I love computer geeks. Computer geeks play computer games.

It simply goes with the territory. Can’t get around it. All those years I spent being sure I didn’t date anyone who liked football are down the tubes. Instead of the Super Bowl, I have to cope with “Fantasy Football, “Puzzle Pirates,” and “Final Fantasy.” And then what do I do? I go and date the creator of a couple of the early computer games, the award winning, “Empire” and “Perfect General.” Cool guy, too. Check out his website at www.baldwinconsulting.org. He’s teaching now, too.

I’m pretty good at card games. Anybody wanna play Texas Hold ‘Em? Spades? Old Maid?
